One of by far the most dramatic (and soothing maybe) scenes in films is when characters tend to collect around the fireplace, sharing stories and hot beverages while sitting in an authoritative and intimidating seats. These seats that generally have an ear-like mounts (though not to be mistaken as ‘ear chairs’) are named wing chairs. 

These chairs are also referred as wing-backs or wing-back chairs. 

The chair’s pattern (mounts) is intended to give comfy guard from drafts and make sure that heat from fireside or fireplace can be trapped or preserved, hence, way back in old times, they were normally placed facing the fireplace.
