Getting in with an IT Staffing Company

I have been having trouble finding a job in this economy.  I have a degree and five years experience as an IT specialist but I was laid off from my last job during a downsizing effort to reduce costs.  My sister recommended that I sign up at an IT Staffing company to see if they would have any clients looking for someone with my skills.  I am willing to try anything and the local staffing company does not charge any fees.  I will continue my job search on my own but signing up at any place that can provide me assistance is greatly appreciated.
